Rejection

Today I got a rejection letter in the mail.
I had submitted two of my quilts into the "Alive In The Arts" Juried Exhibition
at Gallery 110 North here in my home town of Plymouth.
The juror was a Mr. Richard Daehnert, Art Professor Emeritus from the University of Tennessee.
I can not say I am not disappointed as this was my first attempt of getting into a mainstream art show.
Added to that, it is in my home town.   However, I do understand all the reasons that can cause your work to be rejected and it is not always that your work is inferior.  So.....I will move forward with
Gouldians being entered in "The Quilt Expo" in Madison Wi. and if it does well I may enter it in the AQS Paducah Show next year.
"Cobs" will remain on my wall here at home for me to enjoy for now.

Now back to work so I have something to show all of you soon!

I never understand some of the shows and their judging. I have seen quilts that are not very well done and get prizes and beautifully done ones, get passed by.

Art is and always will be, very subjective. Did the judge enclose any information as to why it was not chosen? That could be helpful. At any rate, I would have picked yours!!!

Sorry to hear about your quilt not getting accepted. I know what that's like.

Rejection is NOT a reflection on your talents or your artistry. What is included in a show has more to do with the juror, and his/her personal tastes---THIS CAN BE PARTICULARLY SO IF THE JUROR CONSCIOUSLY OR UNCONSCIOUSLY SELECTS A THEME. If in fact, this happened, it would mean that some pieces would have been preferred over others just because of their title or theme.

Even with all of that said, it still hurts. It always does. These days, I often feel it is the luck of the draw—the right piece, in the right place, with the right juror!

Keep going! Your work is fantastic! But most of all, lick your wounds, pick yourself up by the bootstraps, and enter again! The next one may be YOUR show! (And when this happens to me (AGAIN), you are most welcome to send my words back to me! I, too, will need the reminder!)

Who knows what goes through another person's mind at times. "Cob" is wonderful and deserves recognition. You did an excellent job on it - so be proud of it and hang it in a place of honor. I agree with the last commenter - pick yourself up and keep going.

Hugs - Marie

It is so nice to have friends who give you the encouragement you need to hear to feel better and move forward again. Thank you all for that! It means so much to me.

I want to add to the others and say -bahhhhh on rejection notices!! I want to also encourage you to keep entering local shows - there are a couple of shows here that I've entered that some years I get in and some years rejected - depending on the juror (and my piece I guess LOL!) Still maybe they'll have better taste next time!

As Nellie said, it's not about the quality of the work, but about the juror and a particular vision of the show. I'm sure you'll do better in these other two venues.

Just keep quilting Barbara, rejection happens at some stage to everyone who enters big shows!
Can't wait to see what you are working on next!

Was this the art show that included lots of different media? As you know I have some experience in this area...:)

Take heart-your work is so beautiful and I know the right show will find you:)

Just to even this rejection out, I received word that I have been invited to exhibit at the Domes Art Fair here in Milwaukee. Somehow I convinced three jurors that my stuff was good enough. So there, between you and I we are even..!!
