Question of the Day

Recently I have had someone comment on one of my quilts.   They  broke it down into all the things I did intentionally, but then added something I did without even knowing I did that.  It made me think.....
When creating a piece of art, do we subconsciously add elements and emotions or was it just luck accompanied by another person's interpretation and vision?

I do hope that the artist adds subconscious elements & emotions. But the second alternative is true as well. The spectator contributes his/her vision.
My ideal is to read afterwards what I've done. Sometimes it works.
And being understood crowns the efforts.

Art isn't limited by what is created. It includes the personal reaction and input of the viewer. Which is why one piece that truly is art can go unappreciated by some while others embrace it enthusiastically. And then there's seeing a piece one way and then the next day seeing it another.

And then there is that aspect of the creator imparting more and deeper meaning than he/she was conscious of.

I like to think of it all as a wave of creative consciousness that we all plug into at different levels as well as times. I hate those days I feel "unplugged".

What can I add. I agree with both comments.

I do think art is interactive. I like when others see something that I didn't see. I don't always necessarily agree with something said but that doesn't invalidate that person's observation.

I will also say that I hope I add something unconsciously when I create a piece. I don't think we can fully appreciate our subconscious mind; how it influences us in every aspect of our lives. Besides, the surprises can be fun!

Speaking strictly about my own experience, it is usually simple luck. But we'll call it serendipity because it sounds better.
