As most of you know I always start with a sketch on tissue paper. I like to place it where I plan on using it to make sure the size is right and the pose and the position.
I cut a thin piece of background fabric to place all the feathers on.
The eyes and tiny and require a lot of patience to cut out.
I use the tissue to place all the eye parts.
He looks very wierd here but you must have faith that once all this comes together and he gets a
haircut....or should I say a feather cut...he will look oh so much better.
Better but still pretty crazy.
The feather trim helped a lot...see what did I tell you. Now the tail feathers which are furthest back go on.
Then the wing feathers are constructed and placed on. Chest feathers are added and he is done.
Saw Whet Owls are very small....maybe around 7 or 8 inches. So he sits up on this little tree like a tree top ornament. Now to quilt him which will make his feathers come alive.

TREE
Well, all the bark has been and quilted down as well as the leaves and nuts. All that I have left to finish is the binding edge and the sleeve to hang it. Hopefully that will happen in the next few days. Great relaxing fun working on this tree. Always a good thing for me to do after a much larger complicated piece.

HICKORY TREE BACKGROUND
I like to make my large trees with a background fabric all fused and cutout first. Then I can place the smaller pieces of bark on top of the background using it as the shading and outlining of each piece. I have pinned it on to the quilts background where I like it. I have left the fusible paper on it because I first want to put on leaves and nuts That will be behind the trunk and some of the branches. Only then will I fuse it on and begin the bark. So leaves next.

Tree Addition
Work continues on the Fog piece adding to the foreground with one very large tree. You can see here that one side (right) is quilted with small branches while the left side is not done yet. Tomorrow is my mother's Christmas so not much will happen on this piece for a few days. Stay tuned...more to come.
