When a photo is as complex as this month's "Interpret This" photo, I like to grid it so I stay somewhat
true to the photo when resketching it for the quilt.
I then make another grid larger on my sketch paper and start a loose drawing of the photo. You can see four piles of fabric that are numbered....each pile is for a different building. I auditioned them earlier.
Now I am ready to begin. Hopefully all will go smoothly. Having an extra month this time is a very good thing.

I can't wait to see your piece, I know it will be wonderful. I really need to figure out my priorities, seems I have too many projects lately and no time to work on art quilts and I really want to do some.

I am just so envious here and confess that this was exactly my idea too:)
The sketch looks good ao I can't wait to see how it turns out (I know it is going to be awesome!).
Oh Barbara - what a great inspirational photo - can't wait to see it done. I had tried to use the grid method, but found that the enlargement process really taxed my mind and started stifling my creative process. I still like to use a grid stablizer - just bought a bolt of it - but now I use a full size pattern. I don't copy out pattern pieces from the master drawing but just sorta eye up the sizing and angles to make sure they are somewhat right. At the end I'm always suprised at how different the end product is from the master pattern LOL!
I like your method of making the grid. I tend to be more literal when interpreting a photo; some of my friends make abstract interpretations. It is always interesting to see the outcomes.
This is going to be wonderful! Will you fuse it or applique it?I will definitely be watching your progress on this one.
